Go online. Type in poker on Google. What do you get?
More that likely you’ll get thousands upon thousands of sites dedicated to playing the game. And it’s not surprising; every second there is at least one card being slapped down on a table somewhere in the pursuit of a big, juicy poker pot. But what do you really know about card game poker? This article will fill newcomers in on a few of the nuances of poker, both as a game and as a card based form of income.
There are tons of variations on the standard card game poker. Here we will focus upon the two most common five card variants on the market today: five card draw and another variant, five card stud. Both are a good game, though the differences in the rules may swing you more towards one or the other.
Generally speaking in poker the point is the get a better hand than your opponents. You can do this by getting cards in sequential order, several cards with the same face value (for example, three fours) or cards all with the same suit. Not every card is dealt out; in either case, the hand is five cards in size.
In five card draw the play is simple and fast. Each player gets five cards and can choose to exchange up to three cards per round. This continues until players start to fold. Once all the players are ready, they show their hands and the best hand wins the round, plus any pot that may be involved.
Five card stud varies because most of the cards are played face up, with the exception of one. The player with the lowest ranked card must initiate the betting from there, and it continues around the table as normal until the players have a showdown. Again, the player with the best poker hand wins.
You can also change each game and play them high or low. In the case of low, whichever player has the lowest rank value on their cards (not the worst poker hand) wins.
